The problem is that by then people's impressions were already set, and so goes history. But most of the Vista issues were ironed out by the time the first service pack shipped. Vista's hardware requirements were quite a bit higher than XP's, and their new driver model broke compatibility with many pieces of hardware if the hardware manufacturer was unable/unwilling to provide new drivers. IIRC, nVidia also seemed to have a great deal of difficulty getting their video drivers for Vista sorted out properly as well. There was intense pressure from hardware OEMs and Intel to put some sort of Vista sticker on their PCs.
A lot of people felt misled on this point, but it wasn't a unilateral decision from Microsoft. This would have been a HUGE slap in the face to Intel and those OEMs, so they worked out a deal whereby GMA650-equipped PCs could get a sticker that instead read "Ready for Windows Vista" or "Windows Vista Capable". That meant that a truly massive percentage of the new PCs coming on the market around the same time as Vista wouldn't be eligible to get the "Designed for Windows Vista" sticker on them, which is a big deal to hardware OEMs. The problem was that Intel's integrated video chipset at the time (GMA650, IIRC) wasn't capable of running Vista with the Aero Glass interface enabled. So they started shipping underpowered PC's And Microsoft told OEM's it could run on lower hardware.
